Williamsport, Pa. — While train travel is no longer in its heyday, opportunities remain. A presentation on train travel will be held at James V. Brown Library this August.

The Library will host the free program, “Riding the Train in Central PA,” presented by rail-buff and travel writer Joseph W. Smith III from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29.

Though Williamsport lost its passenger service in 1971, there are still plenty of day-trips for tourist rides like Strasburg and Lehigh Gorge, not to mention Amtrak out of Harrisburg, which connects with 46 contiguous states and three Canadian provinces.

Smith will also offer pointers for long-distance travel, covering the nearest convenient access for America’s most scenic routes — along with types of accommodations and meals.

Smith is a published author, retired English teacher, avid reader, hiker, and adventurer.

The program will be presented in the Lowry Room on the third floor of the Welch Children’s Wing. Registration is required and may be made online through the library calendar or by calling 570-326-0536. A complete listing of all library programs is available at calendar.jvbrown.edu .
