Lewisburg, Pa. — The Union County Library System will be celebrating Library Card Sign-Up Month with a hold on late fees all of September.

The Union County Library System consists of the Public Library for Union County, Lewisburg; Herr Memorial Library, Mifflinburg; and West End Library, Laurelton.

Throughout September, the library will pause overdue fines and make no additions to outstanding debts.

“We understand it’s been a busy year, and we want to extend a bit of grace to our community,” said System Administrator Toby Schwartzman. “Our goal is to encourage new library card sign-ups by taking the stress out of borrowing.”

From Sept. 1 through Sept. 30, the daily charge for late materials will be reduced to zero. If patrons return late materials during this time, they will only have to pay overdue fines for days prior to Sept. 1. Patrons will still be financially responsible for lost or damaged items, and existing account balances will remain in place.

Overdue charges will resume on Oct. 1.

“If you’re new to the library or haven’t used your card for a while, come to any of the Union County libraries in September and see what we have to offer,” Schwartzman said. “In addition to good books, music, and movies, we also have programs, computers, free Wi-Fi, meeting rooms, and more. The library is a place you can be without having to buy something.”

Union County libraries receive about a third of their funding from public sources, making fundraisers and library-generated income necessary to keep the doors open.

Schwartzman expressed gratitude to the many library supporters in the community. “Every dollar given to the libraries, whether it’s a gift or a payment for an overdue book, is an investment in literacy and connection here in Union County. Thank you!”
