Sunbury, Pa. — Through its new Backpack Builders program, PPL Electric Utilities recently helped students of Chief Shikellamy and Shamokin Area elementary schools start their school year with adequate supplies.

According to PPL, the company delivered 600 packs of supplies to the students in Sunbury and Coal Township to help lighten the financial burden that parents face when having to buy new school supplies every year. Students received new notebooks, folders, pens, pencils, and other essential items.

Volunteers with PPL described visits to the schools and meeting the children as fun and rewarding, and said that students were excited to head back to class with backpacks full of new goodies.

In total, PPL Electric distributed 2,500 packs of school supplies to children in its 29-county service area through the new Backpack Builders program, the company said.

Other PPL education programs include Cover to Cover, which supports summer reading for kindergarteners through third graders. This project has donated approximately 9,000 new books to 20 summer reading programs in 2023. PPL also presents annual STEM Educator Awards, which both honor extraordinary teachers and provide funds for classroom supplies.
