Lock Haven, Pa. — From now until Aug. 21, Annie Halenbake Ross Library is accepting donations for its September book sale. Donated items can be more than just books. Actress Shannen Doherty, known for her role in the high school drama series "Beverly Hills 90210," died after a long fight with breast cancer, People magazine reported on Sunday. "It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty," Doherty's publicist Leslie Sloane said in a statement to People. Sloane said Doherty died Saturday "after many years of fighting the disease." ...
Woman cited for leaving dog in hot car
Selinsgrove, Pa. — A woman was cited Monday for leaving a dog in a hot vehicle for over an hour. Trp. Joseph Civello of state police at Selinsgrove says Dontay Shalease M. Wiley, 30, of Sunbury, was parking at a shopping center at 980 N. Susquehanna Trail in Monroe Township when someone discovered the dog inside her vehicle shortly before 5:30 p.m. The temperature outside was 90 degrees, and the temperature inside the vehicle was more than 100 degrees that day, according to Civello. Commonwealth University to host active shooter training
Bloomsburg, Pa. — Don't worry, it's just a drill! The Commonwealth University and the Bloomsburg Police Department will be hosting an active shooter training on Monday, July 15, and Tuesday, July 16. The training will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Approximately 30 law enforcement officers will participate in the interactive training, taking place in Navy Hall. The training will include simulated munitions.

Sunbury, Pa. — A man who allegedly strangled a woman in a Sunbury told police he "hugged her" after she ripped his PlayStation 5 out of the wall, according to court documents. College awarded $4 million grant for apprenticeship programs
Williamsport, Pa. — Penn College has received a $4 million federal grant to boost their apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship training programs. Apprenticeship programs are on the rise across the state and country in response to employer demand for more workers in advanced manufacturing, the college stated in a release. State cut permitting backlog 60% since 2023
The Department of Environmental Protection has long had a reputation for its painfully slow permitting process. Northumberland County recognize area Veterans with resolution
Sunbury, Pa. — The month of July will now be known as Veterans and Armed Services Month in Northumberland County, the Northumberland County Commissioners announced this week. The resolution recognizes the service and sacrifice of the Veterans in the U.S. armed forces. Northumberland County Commissioner Sam Schicchitano shared how the idea came about: “A veterans and armed services month, not a veterans day, not 4th of July day, we need to start with the people who really mean something…but who got us here and who are the ones, that all those other things that they do, they can do now because of our veteran and our people in (armed services).” At the meeting, over a dozen Veterans got an in-person thanks from the commissioners. Also at the meeting, $9,000 was donated for county veterans services—the money was raised by the Sunbury Airport Campground annual poker run.
15-year-old girl victim of sextortion
White Deer, Pa. — Police say an unidentified man befriended a 15-year-old girl on social media and stole her photos to create pornographic images. The girl's mother contacted police on July 3 after she found out the suspect had communicated with the girl via the WhatsApp and Instagram, according to Trp. Tony Croak of state police at Milton. The male suspect had pretended to be a 15-year-old female in order to befriend the girl. The suspect then accessed the girl's Instagram photos and created child pornography using her face and unknown juvenile female body images, Croak said. The suspect then requested money from the girl with the threat of posting the altered images of her. Police continue to investigate.
PennDOT plans safety improvement at 54/642 intersection
Danville, Pa. — A big safety project is coming to a tough intersection. PennDOT is planning to start later this year on an extensive rebuilding of the Route 54/Route 642 intersection in Valley Township, Montour County. The rebuilding and reconfiguration followed a large number of injuries and fatal crashes. The intersection is two interchanges, the Route 642 west lanes, or Liberty Valley Road, and Route 642 east, locally known as Jerseytown Road. PennDOT says they’ll relocate the "Park and Ride" lot, move a section of Route 642, and add new traffic signals. They’ll add left turn lanes, replace a bridge, add lighting, and make other safety improvements. PennDOT has a video of the project on their District 3 website, they’ll start work this winter, and hope to have work completed in four years.

Millville, Pa. — Camp Victory, a summer camp for children and families with special needs and serious illnesses, is hosting a motorcycle ride fundraiser in the gorgeous mountains surrounding the camp. To join the ride, register by Aug. 9 at www.campvictory.org. Pre-registration includes coffee and donuts at the start of the day, a BBQ chicken lunch in the afternoon, and a commemorative pin. The ride will take place on Aug. 25. Riders can mingle and enjoy coffee and donuts starting at 8 a.m., will leave Camp Victory at 10 a.m., and lunch will be served at noon once riders circle back to Camp Victory.
