NORTHERN CAMBRIA, Pa. (WTAJ) — Every Tuesday and Thursday until July 25, WTAJ Sports is debuting a new series that features the top 10 high school football rising seniors in Central PA. This is a list filled with All-State and All-Conference stars. Next up on the list is Northern Cambria quarterback Ty Dumm.

For the past three years, Ty Dumm has been a force for Northern Cambria football. Last year he was listed as a wide receiver and safety on the roster, however, he filled a “do it all” role for the Colts. In 2023 he threw for 600 yards, rushed for 900, and caught 23 passes for 293 yards. He scored 17 total touchdowns which led to him being named to the first team All State for Class 1A

“He’s been a big part of our team since his freshman year, and we tried to incorporate all of his talents from the time that he was a freshman,” said Northern Cambria head coach Sam Shutty. “So, he started since his freshman year and, you know, kind of mix and match. He played wide receiver, he played a little bit of running back, a little bit of slot and quarterback this year. He’s done it all. And like I said, we just tried to maximize his talents as best as we could.”

This year Dumm’s role will change as he will be taking the reigns to the offense as the starting quarterback.

“I like passing, but then I also like running the ball a little bit more. I’m more of a mobile quarterback, so I like to get out of the pocket and run the ball on the run,” Dumm said. “It’s going to be difficult for teams to try to contain me and then have to worry about the pass and then the run as well. So, it’s just going to be hard.”

Head coach Sam Shutty says he’s always been great with his legs under center, but this year he has seen remarkable improvement as a passer.

“He’s a dual threat, so he makes teams honor him in the end,” Shutt said. “So, you might get more people in the box and that opens up a lot in the passing game and Ty’s that type of kid that he wants to do well. He’s not going to just rely on his legs. He’s going to rely on his arm as well. So, he’s improved so much last year with that with the passing game.”

Dumm also stars on the defensive side of the ball as a starting safety. Last year he recorded 94 tackles while using his QB instincts to pick off five passes.

“We talk about his offensive abilities, but defense has really been his strong suit,” Shutty said. “He really has a nose for the ball. He plays safety and he covers sideline to sideline, he covers run, pass, you know, as a safety. I think he was top five for tackle, four losses as a safety. And it’s not because he was playing the run. It was because he understands what offenses are trying to do and he gets really good jump on the ball.”

With Dumm quarterbacking both sides of the ball, the Panthers will look to rebound after being upset in the District VI Class 1A semifinals last year.
