KY League receives Voter Services Grant to fund local voter outreach, increase new voters

The League of Women Voters of Kentucky recently received a grant of $10,000, which will go to local voter outreach before the November election. The Making Democracy Work grant comes from the League of Women Voters of the United States, a national nonpartisan grassroots organization committed to protecting voters rights.

“This support comes at an important time. We are so pleased to bring these resources to our community this election year, so that we can empower more Kentucky voters,” said Laura Weinstein, chair of Voter Service, League of Women Voters of Kentucky.

Grant funds are designated for outreach to voters throughout Kentucky, mobilizing a network of experienced community partners and trained volunteers for extensive nonpartisan canvassing. The League will connect with voters in targeted demographics, including new voters, voters in low-turnout areas and voters who are often marginalized in the electoral process, to support citizen participation and increase engagement.

Trained volunteers will walk neighborhoods and knock on doors to distribute information about Vote411.org/LWVKY , a free, online resource created by LWV to offer nonpartisan election information specifically for Kentucky voters. Vote411 can be used to register to vote, find your local polling location and other election information. During each election, the League organizes candidate forums and other opportunities for the public to access nonpartisan election coverage for local, state, and national races. The League also provides information about the absentee ballot process and produces a voter guide for elections.

“We’ve set a goal to register 1000 new voters in Kentucky through the Vote411 website,” said Weinstein. “We know we can, and we’re excited to get out there and make it happen.”

The campaign will culminate in a statewide Day of Action in October, where League volunteers and partners will gather to get out the vote across the state.

The nonpartisan canvassing campaign is part of the League’s ongoing support for voter engagement. In addition to canvassing, the League hopes to build relationships with voters through text, phone and email. The grant also will support the League’s ongoing efforts to register new voters, including young voters, with event tabling at college campuses throughout the state.
