Kentucky Lt. Governor Jacqueline Coleman visited Holmes Middle School on Thursday to see firsthand how students have implemented a 2024 School Garden Grant.

After talking to students and examining the garden, Coleman came away with a deep appreciation of the creation of the garden which includes vegetables and flowers.

“I can’t wait to go back to the National Lt. Governors Association and brag on the wonderful projects underway at Holmes Middle School,” she said. “The number of subjects coming together and the real-life experience they are getting in the process is pretty amazing.”

The middle school collaborated with the high school carpentry students to build a shed, several raised garden beds and a concrete sidewalk leading to the garden making it accessible for everyone.

Coleman learned that Holmes Middle School also partnered with La Soupe to teach cooking lessons using vegetables gathered from the garden.

Holmes Middle School Principal Lee Turner said the garden will help students learn about plant life cycles, photosynthesis, soil composition, nutrition and more.

“We will be able to use the garden as another instructional resource,” he said. “Hands-on experiences enhance the learning process far more than just reading a textbook.”

The grant was provided by Community Farm Alliance through a USDA Farm to School grant and funding from the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky.
