    New spinning, fitness studio opens in historic downtown building

    A new fitness studio featuring spinning classes, small group weight training and all around personal training has wheeled into Northfield.

    Tina Moen opened Well Fitness Studio Jan. 10. The boutique studio with eight stationary bikes and lots of Minnesota-made Torque fitness equipment, is appropriately located in a chic basement space below Farmstead Bike Shop, 422 Division St. S.

    For Moen, owning her own fitness studio has always been the end game.

    “I’m from a family of entrepreneurs,” she said. “My dad created a house moving business with his father. I knew eventually, I would have my own space and use my own brand, concept and ideas.”

    Despite being in her second month of operation, realizing her dream of finally having her own fitness studio is still a bit surreal.

    Last month, after she finished leading her first spinning class in jumps, climbs and hovers, Moen said she took a minute in her new studio to “take it all in.”

    With a 7-year-old daughter and a 4.5-year-old son, Moen said she wants to be a role model for her kids. She wants them to see that putting in the hard work can pay off.

    This winter, Moen is teaching 12 classes a week. Besides the 50-minute spin and core classes, she also leads the hour-long Full Body Strong and Functional Strength classes. Those small classes of two to six people combine cardio and weight training.

    With a client base ranging from 14 to 70 year olds and an even wider range of skill levels, Moen said she enjoys finding creative solutions to help her clients meet their fitness goals.

    The spin and core classes can burn off between 300-400 calories. Since the individual controls their own resistance while they cycle up and down hills and recover on flat roads, Moen said she helps keep them motivated through her voice prompts. She coordinates the workout music tempo to fit the level of physical exertion.

    She tells her fitness clients every exercise is modifiable. Whether they are doing Russian twists with dumbbells, high knee burpees or 12 reps of bicep curls, Moen said she’s there to check their form, positioning and accuracy.

    After receiving a bachelor’s in exercise science, Moen earned a master’s in Kinesiology, both degrees were from the University of Minnesota. “Most of my career has been in fitness, she said. “I’m passionate about what I do. I see people grow physically.”

    One early Well Fitness client, Andrea Mazzariello, explained that last winter he became obsessed with running the Twin Cities Marathon. “Predictably, I immediately blew my leg out and turned to other ways to move and train. That’s when I started working privately with Tina,” said Mazzariello. “It was always a challenge, never a chore, consistent from session to session but never the same, and always a highlight of the week. The new space seems to make all of the good things better, the right combination of 80s martial arts movie and 2024 fitness center.”

    Before she and her family moved to Northfield in 2022, Moen ran a stand up paddle business and worked as a personal trainer for Twin Cities corporations. Her wellness clients included employees from Best Buy, United Health, Optum Health Care and Twin Cities Orthopedic.

    With plans to gradually grow her business by hiring additional fitness instructors and adding more classes, Moen said she also plans to sell her own merchandise. Soon, a corner of the rectangular studio will feature the Well Fitness logo emblazoned upon water bottles, tee shirts and baseball caps.

    Besides handling all the marketing and accounting for Well Fitness, Moen has also designed the website.

    “I am a one woman show right now,” she said.
