    Northfield baseball edges out win over Mayo

    The Northfield High School baseball team posted its fourth consecutive victory of the 2024 season with a 12-11 victory over Rochester Mayo on Tuesday, April 23 in Dundas.

    The victory improved the Raiders’ record to 4-3, 4-3 Big 9 on the season with the team’s next schedule game set for Tuesday, April 30 at Albert Lea followed by a Wednesday, May 1 game at Rochester Century and a game on Thursday, May 2 at Red Wing. Northfield will then return home on Saturday, May 4 for a 11:00 a.m. home game against Stewartville at the ballpark in Dundas.

    In the match against Rochester Mayo, Northfield jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and then padded its lead to 8-0 with four more runs in the second inning. Mayo rallied with six runs in the fourth inning before NHS stretched its lead to 9-6 with a solo run in the fourth inning.

    Mayo gained the game’s lead after it scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning to make the tally 11-9. The Raiders battled back with a solo run in the bottom of the fifth and then went on to gain the game winner with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

    The seventh inning rally started with a single by Jake Geiger. He advanced to second on a bunt by Tegan Mellgren. A walk and a single then loaded the bases for Northfield with one out. The Raiders went on to tie the game when Seth Thompson collected a walk and the winning run was added after Aaron Reisetter walked to force in the go ahead run at 12-11.

    Geiger was an offensive leader at the plate with four runs and four hits to his credit in the contest, while Thompson had three hits, three RBIs and two runs scored. Other top contributors were Ryan Cahoon with two hits and two RBIs and Reisetter with one hit and three RBIs.

    Northfield outhit Mayo 14-11 in the game. Mellgren started the game on the mound and pitched four innings with six strikeouts. Thompson finished the game and gained the win with two innings of relief work that included four strikeouts.
