    Northfield FFA Chapter celebrates 1st year back operating after over 3 decades

    The Northfield FFA Chapter celebrated its first year in 33 years at its chapter banquet held at Northfield High School on Wednesday, May 22 with over 120 members, parents, elected officials and guests.

    The chapter was officially chartered at the Minnesota State FFA Convention on April 21. Since last year’s state convention, five new chapters have been chartered in Minnesota. This brings the number of chapters statewide to 218 with over 15,000 FFA members enrolled in agriculture, food and natural resource (AFNR) classes. Northfield FFA Chapter has 41 members and all of the students enrolled in AFNR classes.

    During the banquet, the FFA Chapter thanked all the donors: Central Farm Service, Community Resource Bank, Compeer Financial, Minnesota Ag Education Leadership Council (MAELC), McNamara Family Farm, Midwest Machinery, Minnesota Ag Group, Minnesota FFA Foundation, Nerstrand Agri Center, Rice County Farm Bureau, River Country Cooperative, Ed Terry in memory of Helen Peterson, Syngenta, Waterford Warriors Snowmobile Club and Zoetis.

    Supporters of the fruit sales, root beer float sales, and floral sales were also thanked for helping to raise over $15,500.

    Career and leadership development

    Approximately 2,800 FFA members from across Minnesota compete and place in Career Development Events (CDE) and Leadership Development Events (LDE) during the Minnesota FFA State Convention.The Northfield FFA Chapter had the following members participate in CDEs and LDEs at this year’s state convention. They include:

    ● Farm Business Management Team placed 23rd in state earning a silver ranking. Members included: Keith Harner who placed 22nd, gold ranking; Ella Pagel earned silver ranking; and Olivia Hohrman and Charlie Johnson earned a bronze ranking. They were coached by Jeff Schultz.

    ● Horse Evaluation Individual Alison Malecha earned a silver ranking.

    ● Poultry Evaluation Individual Macy Mueller earned a silver ranking.

    Also participating in CDEs and LDEs this year were as follows:

    ● General Livestock Fall Invite, team members included: Kadan Wood, Olivia Hohrman and Alison Malecha

    ● Dairy Cattle Evaluation Fall Invite and Falcon Challenge, team members included: Molly Albers, Grant Kreft, Tavis Ballstadt and Andrew Winter

    ● General Livestock Falcon Challenge, team members included: Ella Pagel, Wyatt Pagel, Keith Harner and Sam Harner

    ● Milk Quality Evaluation, team members included: Grant Kreft, Shaina Ylinen, Gunnar Johnson, Maddy Hanson and Tavis Ballstadt

    ● Fish and Wildlife Winter Invitational, team members included: Jackson Volkert and Quinton McCabe

    ● Companion Animal Winter Invitational, team members included: Shania Ylinen and Maddison Hanson

    ● Ag Mechanics, team members included: Wyatt Pagel, Carter Feldman, Parker Malecha and Sam Harner

    ● Floriculture,team members included: Josie Kuennen, Maddison Hanson, Kadan Wood and Tara Alaniz

    ● Prepared Public Speaking, individual: Maddy Sevcik

    Awards

    Outstanding Achievement award recognizes a student from each grade that shows outstanding leadership qualities. This individual is an active member that is a ‘go to’ person for FFA questions and activities and is a team player. These awards are selected by their peers. The recipients of the Chapter Leadership Award are:

    ● 7th Grade: Wyatt Pagel

    ● 8th Grade: Sam Harner

    ● Freshman: Grant Kreft

    ● Sophomore: Hector Villaneva

    ● Junior: Keith Harner

    ● Senior: Jadyn Schulz

    ● Holden Farms Award honors the most outstanding senior in agriculture: Maddy Sevcik

    ● Dekalb Agricultural Accomplishment Award is awarded to a senior who exemplifies one’s scholarship, commitment and work ethic and is a source of pride and encouragement to others interested in agriculture: Maddy Sevcik

    Scholarships

    ● Randolph FFA Alumni Scholarship of $800: Maddy Sevcik

    ● Randolph FFA Alumni Vocational Scholarship of $800: Maddy Sevcik who is attending D.C.T.C. to become a heavy construction diesel technician.
