Various baseball teams in the area are winding down their seasons in the midst of summer. The Northfield VFW baseball team has just three regular season games before the playoffs start, and it seems to be getting hotter every game.

Northfield has won every game they have played in July so far, five in total. Their latest victory was on Saturday against Cannon Falls, winning in a 13-0, four-inning shutout in the second game of a doubleheader.

    Versus Rochester Mayo

Northfield hosted the Rochester Mayo Spartans VFW team on Monday, July 1 in a doubleheader. Both games were offensive battles as both teams scored 13 or more runs in each game.

The Spartans scored three runs in the first, but Northfield got two of those runs back with a steal of home by Christian Whiteman and a score by Henry Webber on a wild pitch.

Northfield then scored seven runs in the second to take a 9-3 lead. The comfortable lead didn’t last long though as the Spatans scored five runs in the third and then took the lead by scoring three runs in the fourth to make the score 11-9.

Northfield was unable to score in the third and fourth innings, but a five-run fifth inning had them take the lead once again with a 14-9 score. The Spartans once again answered with scoring three runs in the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Whiteman hit a double that scored Dylan Morrow. The double was Whiteman’s fourth hit of the game, and the run scored by Morrow was Whiteman’s fourth RBI of the game.

Michael Steward then came into pitch for Northfield in the seventh inning and pitched a shutout inning to close the game.

Northfield’s second game in the double header against Rochester Mayo was similar to the first as both teams went back and forth controlling the game.

The Spartans once again struck first in the first inning with two runs, but Northfield scored nine runs in the second. The Spartans scored four in the fourth to cut Northfield’s lead to just three with a 9-6 score, but Northfield scored two in the fourth.

The Spartans took the lead back in the sixth inning with six runs, with the score being 12-11. Northfield then scored eight in their half of the sixth, ultimately winning the contest 19-13.

    Versus Faribault

Northfield stayed at home on Wednesday to face off against Faribault. Northfield had a 6-0 lead at the end of the fifth inning, thanks to Owen Jenson and Rourke Bennet, who both had two hits in the contest.

Faribault scored two runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh, but that wasn’t enough as Northfield won 6-3. Jens Amunrud was the starting pitcher for Northfield, going six innings with six strikeouts and giving up only two runs, both coming in the sixth inning.

    At Cannon Falls

Northfield traveled to Cannon Falls on Saturday for a double header against their VFW team. Northfield outscored Canon Falls 25-4 in the games, even shutting out Cannon Falls in the second game in the four-inning contest.

Tyler Hupton and Michael Steward both had three hits in the game, with Hupton being one of four Northfield players to have two RBIs in the game, joining Whiteman, Tyler Holz, and Jenson. Bennett was the winning pitcher of the game, going six innings and only giving up three hits and three runs with eight strikeouts.

Northfield continued their dominance in the second game against Cannon Falls. Whiteman, Jenson, and Webber collectively pitched a no-hitter, with the game ending in the fourth inning after Cannon Falls scored an unanswered 13 runs.

All but one of the Northfield starting batters had an RBI, with Bennett having four. Northfield looks to continue their dominance as they face-off against Kasson-Mantorville on the road Wednesday before ending their regular season with a double header against the Rochester JM rockets on Saturday at home.
