Third graders at Greenvale Park Elementary School enjoyed a first day of school surprise when they walked into the lunchroom Tuesday.

Behind the counter serving their pizza lunch were Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan and Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) Commissioner Willie Jett. Flanagan and Jett were joined in the serving line by House Rep. Kristi Pursell.

The elected officials were at the Northfield school after a stop at a school in St. Anthony to kick off the 2024-25 school year by greeting students and educators. For the second year, families are set to save thousands on school breakfast and lunch costs from the universal meals program.
