3 Northfield council candidates answer questions ahead of primary
Three questions were posed to the three candidates running for the open at-large seat on the Northfield City Council. All three candidates, David DeLong, Davin Sokup and Thelma Estrada, would like to occupy the open seat vacated by Clarice Grenier Grabau, who decided this spring to throw her hat into the ring as a Democrat for the local Minnesota Senate seat, which will no longer be filled by Republican Rep. City dismissed, but vaccine lawsuit against Northfield Hospital + Clinics continues
The city of Northfield is no longer part of the lawsuit by former Northfield Hospital + Clinics employees over its COVID-19 vaccine mandate. The federal lawsuit is continuing, though, against the hospital and clinic system. The lawsuit was filed by former NH+C employees who were fired or say they were forced to resign after they were denied religious or medical exemptions to the hospital’s COVID-19 vaccine requirement. At last week’s meeting, Northfield School District Superintendent Matt Hillmann outlined the three pathways regarding the high school improvements that School Board members must decide between. He has added clever titles to distinguish each pathway. The first, “Renew, Renovate and Reinvest” would replace the HVAC systems, windows, and lights, improve the career technical education classrooms, and add modern furniture. Following the World Health Organization’s decision to declare monkeypox a Global Health Emergency, local Public Health Departments are vowing to stay prepared for any potential local outbreaks that may come. The WHO declared that the virus now constitutes a Global Health Outbreak on July 23, after more than 16,000 cases were reported across the world. A heavy object weighing enough to break a large pane of glass and a can of spray paint were the apparent tools in a vandalism spree at the Northfield Women's Clinic, 314 Washington St. On Tuesday, July 26, Northfield Police Chief Mark Elliott said his officers responded to a damage to property report that occurred during the overnight hours. The vandalism involved a broken front window and spray paint on the Washington Street side of the building stating "Fake Clinic Not Safe." "We do not have any further update on that," said Elliott. "If people have information on who might be responsible, we encourage them to call the Northfield Police Department." The best number to call is 507-645-4477. Attempts by the Northfield News to contact employees at the Northfield Women's Center regarding the vandalism incident were unsuccessful.

Despite obstacles, Rice County Fair gets 'better and better'
Now that coronavirus restrictions have mostly subsided, the Rice County Fair garnered a big turnout. Even in the face of a heatwave, thunderstorm and even a fight that broke out, fair officials and vendors said it was one of the best crowds they’ve seen in years.
