Northfielders compete at state high school fishing championship
The sport of fishing is typically associated with a relaxing day at the lake, but for two members of the Northfield High School fishing team, their trip to the recent 2022 Minnesota Junior BASS Nation High School championship was a whirlwind of activity on Sept. 10-11 on the Whitefish Chain of lakes near Brainerd. The Defeat of Jesse James Days Committee will likely be talking about last weekend’s festival for years. And, likely counting the money for a few more days. The picture-perfect weather attracted larger than usual crowds at all scheduled events spread across the city and throughout the five day festival. “You know, there’s estimates of, over five days on average, 200,000 plus people that come and participate in some form in the Defeat of Jesse James Days,” said Galen Malecha, chair of Defeat of Jesse James Days committee. “That’s a lot of people visiting Northfield. Northfield High School will be inducting six individuals and a team into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 8. The following Northfield High School graduates will be inducted: Rieber Paulson, Bubba Sullivan, James Heinen, Anthony Jacobs, Bri Zabel and Morgan Zabel. The girls swim and dive team (1998 state champions) will enter the Hall of Fame in the team category. The festivities will be held at Northfield High School, with a Continental Breakfast beginning at 9 a.m. and the induction ceremony at 10 a.m. The complimentary breakfast will be in the lower cafeteria, with the ceremony taking place in the high school auditorium. Historic video of 1st DJJD reenactment discovered
In 1948, attendees in downtown Northfield witnessed the very first reenactment of the Jesse James gang bank robbery. Now, 74 years later, thanks to some sleuthing from local history buffs, an historic video showing two-and-a-half minutes of the presentation has surfaced.
