One of the few privately owned toll bridges in the country told beach-going drivers in New Jersey it accidentally charged them twice recently.

The Downbeach Express, owned by Ole Hansen and Sons, connects Northfield with Margate City, near Atlantic City.

On Wednesday, the firm said the company it uses to process credit cards “experienced a technical issue that resulted in duplicate charges for some of our customers.”

The apology notice, posted to its website , said the glitch happened June 27, with “some of our customers” being billed twice.

The bridge does not accept EZ-Pass. Instead, frequent crossers can sign up for an Express Pass that offers discounted tolls that are deducted from a pre-paid card.

The statement did not say whether the erroneous charges impacted pass holders, drivers who pay with credit card at the toll gates, or both.

The bridge’s owners are tight-lipped about its operations and the number of bridge crossings are hard to come by. But, the bridge is still popular way on to or off of Absecon Island, despite a free crossing in nearby Longport.

Margate, home of Lucy the Elephant , provides quick access to Ventnor and Atlantic City.

Downbeach Express said users would be refunded within 48 hours.
