PHOTOS: Brookfield Zoo welcomes new animal residents
CHICAGO - Brookfield Zoo has announced the addition of several new animals, which includes emus, a sloth bear, and a puggle. In late June, three 3-month-old emus arrived at the Zoo. The one male and two females are adjusting to their outdoor habitat alongside kangaroos at Australia House. Emus, the second-largest birds in the world, are flightless and can sprint up to 30 mph, according to the zoo. The young emus have already gained 25% of their body weight in the past month.
White Sox make flurry of moves ahead of their first game after All-Star break
The White Sox announced a flurry of roster moves ahead of their return to the field versus the Royals on Friday. The team called up Brooks Baldwin, Chuckie Robinson and Steven Wilson. Art student wins last ‘paint out’
Lucy Clary won Friday’s paint out at the Evanston Plein Art Festival. Nineteen artists painted scenes around the Noyes Cultural Center, 927 Noyes St. Clary, 19, raised in Chicago, is a summer intern for Evanston Made, the organization that sponsors the event. She is starting her second year at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. “I chose the scene with all the foliage and the quiet train tracks,” she said. The festival’s grand finale will run from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday at the Rotary International, 1560 Sherman Ave. Sixty plein-air painters will display one work for judging and sell their art. Lombard Park District Upstart Performing Arts will present NEWSIES JR. August 2-4 at the Sunset Knoll Recreation Center (820 S. Finley Road, Lombard). Disney's Newsies JR. is a 60-minute version of the 2012 Broadway musical, based on the 1992 film. Inspired by the rousing true story of newsboys in turn-of-the-century New York City, Newsies JR. features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein.
