South Portland leaders deny proposal to turn school building into transitional housing
PORTLAND (WGME) -- The South Portland city council effectively rejected a proposal to turn the old Mahoney Middle School building into transitional housing for asylum seekers. The school has been vacant for more than a year, since students moved out last June. Since it's closed, the city has been debating a permanent use for the building.

Houlton tribe to create space for teens with $1.2 million state grant
HOULTON, Maine – A $1.2 million state grant will help fund a digitally equipped space for teens at the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians Boys and Girls Club in Houlton. One of 12 organizations to receive a Maine Connectivity Authority Connectivity Hub grant on Monday, the Boys and Girls Club’s renovation initiative expands the existing 3,278 square foot facility to include a space tailored to teen needs, said Jon Solomon, chief executive officer of Boys and Girls Clubs of Border Towns.

The annual chicken barbecue sponsored by the China Village Fire Department will take place on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at 11 a.m. The cost is $15 and will include a half chicken, baked beans, potato chips, roll and can of soda or bottled water. They plan to offer a drive-thru service again this year. Tables and chairs will be available for seating inside the station, or meals may be packaged to go.
