Volunteers needed for water stargrass harvest season on the Lower Yakima River
BENTON & FRANKLIN COUNTIES, Wash. — The Benton and Franklin Conservation Districts are looking for volunteers to help them clear the Lower Yakima River of a unique problem in our basin. That’s water stargrass, which has been around in the area since the late-90s, early-2000s in the river.

Fish to blame for 500-acre fire, how they find themselves near power lines
BENTON COUNTY, Wash. - Benton County fire crews have suspected that a fish was to blame for a 500-acre fire that was started near Paterson on July 30. A charred fish was found near the substation where the fire started, and Benton PUD even has pictures of, what they suspect to be, the bird who dropped the fish over the substation.
Progress Made on Retreat Fire: Containment Rises to 18%
Firefighters are gaining some ground on the Retreat Fire burning 14 miles southwest of Naches. So far Firefighters say the fire has grown from 29,499 acres on Tuesday to 29,502 today. Containment is also increasing now at 18%. Fire officials say firing operations will resume in multiple locations on the incident, and increased smoke will be very visible for the next several days.
Innovative fish passage meant to revive Yakima River Basin salmon opens in Cle Elum
U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland was in Cle Elum, Wash., Wednesday to highlight federally funded salmon restoration projects. Secretary Haaland joined Gov. Jay Inslee and state, local and Native American tribal leaders to celebrate the opening of almost 30 miles of critical habitat for salmon and steelhead populations above Cle Elum Dam via the completion of the juvenile fish passage facility.
Dance studio mourns loss of 13-year-old girl who drowned in Clear Lake
SPOKANE VALLEY- Addyson Shafer, the 13-year-old girl who accidentally drowned in Clear Lake Saturday, was a dancer at Spokane Elite Dance Studio for almost 10 years. Shafer was a part of the studio’s Competitive Lyrical Dance team and even received a dance scholarship in 2023 to train in New York City.
Othello council accepts annexation request
Jul. 31—OTHELLO — A request to annex about 750 acres into the city of Othello along Bench Road will be considered by the Othello City Council.
