PALMER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WHTM) – A driver and pedestrian were taken to area hospitals after an accident at a Northumberland grocery store parking lot.

Palmer Township Police say on Monday at 11:16 a.m. first responders were dispatched to the GIANT grocery store on S. 25th Street for an accident.

Police say a female driver accelerated through the grocery store parking lot, struck an 18-year-old pedestrian, and then struck a pillar located at the front of the store.

The pedestrian was taken to an area hospital with moderate injuries. The driver was entrapped and extricated by Palmer Fire before being taken to the hospital with moderate to severe injuries.

Police say the cause of the crash was either mechanical or driver error, as the driver was not impaired or distracted.

Officials later checked the structural integrity of the grocery store and deemed it to have no structural damage.
