NORTHUMBERLAND, NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Northumberland police have initiated a blue envelope program for drivers on the autism spectrum.

The Northumberland Police Department has initiated a blue envelope program where drivers on the autism spectrum can place their vehicle registration, insurance card, driver’s license, and emergency contact information.

Police say the envelope has instructions on the front side for the driver and instructions on the back for the officer to help with communications during the traffic stop.

“Our hope is to make a potentially stressful interaction less stressful, with a clear understanding that communication differences may exist. We aim for a positive outcome on the interaction and invite all parties involved to be part of this community-driven initiative,” stated Northumberland Police.

This program is voluntary. Anyone wishing to get an envelope may contact the Northumberland Police Department.
