    Week 1 of the fall athletic season showed us a glimpse of how talented the area is.

    On the gridiron, Choctaw and Niceville especially flexed with wins over fellow ranked foes. Freeport got a much-needed jolt of confidence with a shutout at North Bay Haven, while Baker looked stout with Matt Brunson back at the helm.

    And on the volleyball court, Niceville and Freeport are both off to hot starts with their new head coaches.

    Taking all that in, it's time to honor the standouts with our Athlete of the Week of the new school year. Voting runs through Friday at noon, with the winner announced that afternoon. Vote now, vote often.

    Athlete of the Week Nominees

    Von Keller, Choctaw football : The sophomore rushed for 248 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Big Green to a 31-7 road win at reigning 5A state champ Gulf Shores.

    Connor Mathews, Niceville football: The senior UMass commitment rushed for 235 yards on 20 carries, including 140 yards and two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to lift the Eagles past South Sumter, 35-28.

    Joshua Juntunen, Freeport football: The junior linebacker delivered two sacks and six tackles in the Bulldogs' shutout win over North Bay Haven.

    Zy Tassin, Crestview football: The sophomore did it all Friday night, rushing for a touchdown, catching a touchdown and throwing for a touchdown in the Bulldogs' 42-7 home win over Milton.

    Cavin Wilks, Baker football: Wilks rushed for 180 yards and a touchdown and had an interception in Baker's 34-6 win over FAMU.

    Wells Bettenhausen, Walton football: The senior threw for 382 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for another score in a 50-44 loss at Marianna.

    Carnley Summerlin, Niceville volleyball: The sophomore delivered 43 assists, 12 digs, six aces and six kills in a 3-1 win for the 2-0 Eagles.
