    Methodist Hospitals ranked #1 in Indiana for racial inclusivity

    Methodist Hospitals was recognized for its social responsibility, receiving an “A” grade on the Lown Institute Hospitals Index.

    The Lown Institute is a nonprofit health care think tank. The institute measures hospitals across metrics of health equity, patient outcomes and value of care. In 2024, they ranked over 3,600 hospitals nationwide.

    “We are gratified that, for the second year in a row, our efforts to bring excellent care to our diverse community with an equally diverse staff have been recognized by the Lown Institute,” said Matt Doyle, Methodist Hospitals president and CEO, in a press release .

    Methodist Hospitals was ranked eighth of 71 acute care hospitals in Indiana on the Social Responsibility Index. It was named No. 1 in the state and among the top 10 nationwide on racial inclusivity. According to the index, the hospital also ranked fifth in Indiana in health equity. It received “A” grades on patient outcomes and cost efficiency.

    “Great care is only great if everyone can access it,” said Dr. Vikas Saini, president of the Lown Institute. “We need hospitals that are not only leaders in clinical care, but also strong community partners — and these socially responsible hospitals are showing the way.”

    The Lown Hospitals Index for Social Responsibility evaluates hospitals on over 50 measures, including community benefit, racial inclusivity and avoidance of overuse. Data sources include Medicare fee-for-service and Medicare Advantage claims, CMS patient safety data and hospital cost reports, and IRS 990 forms, among others. The Lown Institute is based in Brookline, Massachusetts.

    Methodist Hospitals is a community-based, not-for-profit health system. It has two acute care facilities in Gary and Merrillville. Methodist Hospitals has served Northwest Indiana for over 100 years.
