A heat advisory is in effect for southern New England from 12 p.m. Monday to 10 p.m. Tuesday.

Temperatures are expected to reach a high of 94 degrees and together with the high humidity could cause heat-related illnesses, warned the National Weather Service's Norton office.

The heat index value, which takes humidity into account, could reach a blistering 101 degrees today in Norwich.

"Dangerous heat and humidity is on tap for our region today through Wednesday, with the chance for mainly afternoon and evening thunderstorms each day, and especially later Wednesday into Wednesday night," the forecaster discussion said. "A cold frontal passage late Wednesday into Thursday will give way to a much more comfortable airmass to end this work week."

Where is the heat advisory in effect for?

Counties affected are Northern Fairfield-Northern New Haven, Northern Middlesex, Northern New London, Southern Fairfield, Southern New Haven, and Southern Middlesex.

    How to stay safe

The NWS recommends staying hydrated and making sure people have access to air conditioning, said an NWS spokesperson.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

    Tuesday's forecast

Forecast for Norwich: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Tuesday. Mostly sunny, with a high near 94. Heat index values as high as 98. Southwest wind 5 to 11 mph. Tuesday night's forecast is for a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 2 a.m. Partly cloudy, with a low around 73. Southwest wind 6 to 8 mph.
