Notre Dame has unveiled new blue and gray jerseys that will be worn during the Shamrock Series on Nov. 23, but fans of The Fighting Irish have called the uniforms "ugly" following overwhelming criticism.

The jerseys will be worn when facing Army in the 12th installment of the Shamrock Series later this year, and the team has once again designed alternate uniforms for the special occasion. This year is a special one for Notre Dame, as it marks the 100th anniversary of the famous 1924 team that went unbeaten and won its first national championship .

The 1924 team was led by the great "Four Horsemen" backfield, consisting of quarterback Harry Stuhldreher, halfbacks Don Miller and Jim Crowley, and fullback Elmer Layden. A famous article was written by legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice on the "Four Horseman" where he described a blue-gray sky as they beat Army, which was the inspiration for the new jersey design.

While the narrative behind the jerseys is historic, fans can't help but slam the designs, especially after seeing that the numbers will be bright gold. The number font is also gothic as part of a "Gothic in Gotham" initiative, but fans don't seem to be in a rush to buy a jersey.

"The officials shouldn't even allow this on the field," one fan wrote. "Shiny gold numbers are practically impossible to read from a distance. You want to sell this in the gift store? Fine. But this is a costume, not a uniform."

"It's a good thing these are one-time uniforms because they look like ----," another added. One fan brutally reviewed: "Every year they get worse. The designs are getting more basic and lazy every year. Just wish they would actually put effort into them and make them relate more to the game and match up with more detail."

Notre Dame and Under Armour attempted to pay homage to one of the most famous articles ever written on The Fighting Irish. The famous piece published on Oct. 18, 1924, reads: "Outlined against a blue-gray October sky the Four Horsemen rode again.

"In dramatic lore, they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction, and death. These are only aliases. Their real names are: Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley, and Layden. They formed the crest of the South Bend cyclone before which another fighting Army team was swept over the precipice at the Polo Grounds this afternoon as 55,000 spectators peered down upon the bewildering panorama spread out upon the green plain below."

Notre Dame will hope that the negative jersey reception won't impact its performance, as the team remains unbeaten in all 11 Shamrock Series games. Notre Dame also has a brilliant record when playing at Yankee Stadium, and is yet to concede a single touchdown on that turf.

Army was defeated 27-3 at Yankee Stadium by Notre Dame in the Shamrock Series in 2010, and they again won at the MLB stadium by a score of 36-3 against Syracuse in 2018. Notre Dame has faced Army on one other occasion in the series, winning 44-6 at The Alamodome in San Antonio, TX.
