Whispering Bear and I spent June 17-19 on the Nottoway below Delaware. The water was clear and unbelievably averaged 84 degrees… that’s hot. Air temps ranged from 65 to 87 degrees. We saw an NC DEQ boat out there and asked about the dissolved oxygen, and remarkably they said it was good. Trash was light, […] The post RIVERGUARD REPORT: The rivers really need rain appeared first on The Tidewater News.

Ready, Set, PUSH!
Blackstone volunteer firefighters, local dignitaries, and other guests participated Monday afternoon, June 10th, in the department’s push-in ceremony for its $1.7 million, 38-ton ladder truck. The 2023 Pierce Ascendant Aerial Device is 43 ft. long and has a ladder capable of extending 100 feet. Blackstone’s new ladder truck will respond to all structure fires in Nottoway County. Firefighters and officials say it’s particularly needed since the three-story former VUMAC building has been transformed into The Inn at Blackstone hotel. In addition, Blackstone is the “first call” agency to respond to fire calls at the U. S. State Department’s $500 million Foreign Affairs Security Training Center (FASTC), which has several multistory buildings at its location at Fort Barfoot.
Around Town
Blackstone Town Council will hold a public hearing next Monday night, June 17th, on its proposed budget that takes effect July 1st. Nottoway Supervisors will hold their second hearing on the County’s proposed budget — which includes a 20% tax increase on real estate — next Thursday night, June 20th. Proposed budgets can be found today on pages 10 and 11. National politics is more entertaining (and more disheartening), but in many cases it’s LOCAL government that can cause the greatest amount of good, or harm, in the shortest period of time. Don’t wait until your tax bills arrive in October before you start paying attention.
