Novato police will be staffing extra officers through Sunday evening to patrol for drivers who may be driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The increase in staffing is due to the Fourth of July holiday and the long weekend to follow. According to a press release from the department, the Fourth of July week tends to see a spike in fatal car crashes -- including those involving alcohol -- higher than other holiday weeks.

DUIs do not just involve alcohol -- any substance that impairs a person counts. That includes marijuana, over-the-counter medications and prescription drugs.

The Novato Police Department encourages partygoers to seek out sober rides and for others to volunteer as designated drivers. Additionally, it recommends that individuals hosting parties or gatherings for the holiday offer plenty of nonalcoholic alternatives and monitor those who are drinking.

"Choosing a sober driver is not just about following the law; it's about saving lives," Sgt. Reza Pourfarhani of Novato police said in a statement Monday. "If you plan on celebrating the Fourth of July with a drink, we want everyone to make a plan to go safely with a sober ride home. Think of your loved ones, friends, and family before getting behind the wheel."

The extra patrols are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
