City Council Appoints Phillips to Fill Vacant Position on Council
The Coleman City Council met Thursday, July 18, 2024, at City Hall. Agenda item number 6 was to appoint a qualified person to fill the vacancy on the City Council for Place 2, West Ward, in accordance with the City of Coleman Charter, Section 2.06. Two names were mentioned, Joe Haynes and Berry Phillips. The Council voted to appoint Berry Phillips to fill the unexpired term of Place 2. Phillips will take the place of Sharlene Taylor Hetzel whose resignation from the Council was effective June 5, 2024. The Council also awarded a bid to Core & Main Waterworks of San Angelo for the Texas Water Development Board Lead Service Line Replacement Project. In other business, items 9 and 10, pertaining to a Pole Attachment License Agreement, were withdrawn from the agenda at the beginning of the meeting.

Awards Day Held for Coleman Public Library Summer Reading Program
The Coleman Public Library and Friends held Awards Day for the 2024 reading program “Adventure Begins at Your Library” on Wednesday, July 17th, at 2:00 pm at the Family Center in the City Park. Those attending were delighted to participate in a magic show presented by Bronson Chadwick funded with a grant from Coleman County Foundation. Mr. Chadwick is a past president of the Texas Association of Magicians and regional vice president of the Society of American Magicians. He’s entertained over 1,000,000 people.

Puppies abandoned at Odessa park found by Good Samaritan
ODESSA, Texas — Ten unweaned Chihuahua mix puppies were found abandoned at Casa Bella Park on Tuesday afternoon, according to Odessa Animal Control. The puppies, estimated to be about 20 days old and without teeth, include six males and four females. Dog Rescue R Us, a local rescue organization, is partnering with the Odessa Animal Shelter to provide care for the puppies.

CBS affiliate in El Paso ending most of its local news programming
El Paso’s CBS affiliate is eliminating most and perhaps all of its local newscasts, the latest erosion of local news in the nation’s 23rd largest city. “Beginning August 5, we will be making changes to the way we produce news in El Paso and refocusing our resources across our two stations in the market, CBS4 and KFOX14,” said Jessica Bellucci, a spokesperson for Sinclair Broadcast Group, which owns El Paso’s FOX and CBS affiliates.

El Paso County will break ground on the Fabens Airport Hangar Expansion on Tuesday, pushing forward a long-stagnant project that, in part, ended up pausing a $15 million grant that the University of Texas El Paso's Aerospace Center was supposed to receive from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
