Fatal Pedestrian Accident on Northeast Georgia Highway

A 46-year-old Elberton man is dead after being hit by a car while walking along a Northeast Georgia highway. Sammy Terrell Smith was pronounced dead following the accident on GA 17 near Woodyard Road in Elbert County, state troopers say.

According to Sgt. J.R. Dean of Georgia State Patrol Post 52 in Hartwell, troopers responded to the crash around 8:35 p.m. Saturday, April 27.

Dean says 66-year-old Connie F. Nelson of Dewy Rose was driving a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix north on GA 17. Smith was walking in the northbound lane. The car struck Smith, fatally injuring him.

Elbert County EMS transported Smith to Elbert Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Nelson suffered minor injuries but was not transported to the hospital. An 11-year-old male in the car with her was not injured.

Sgt. Dean says no charges are expected to be filed.
