A Habersham County Sheriff’s K-9 unit helped rescue a trapped driver from a wrecked vehicle west of Clarkesville Thursday night, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

At 7:21 p.m. on August 29, 911 callers reported the overturned vehicle on GA 17 near Hayes Corner. A K-9 unit was in the area and was first on the scene, says Habersham County Public Information Officer Rob Moore. The deputy found the driver inside the vehicle near a broken utility pole.

Habersham County Emergency Services responded to the wreck. First responders freed the driver and transported them to the hospital.

Georgia State Patrol Post 7 in Toccoa is investigating the wreck but has not released any details, including the driver’s name.

Moore says the wreckage was almost completely covered in tall vegetation. Law enforcement detoured traffic onto Cool Springs Road while they worked to clear the wreckage. Highway 17 reopened at 9 p.m.
