NUTTER FORT, W.Va. (WBOY) — A nearly two-decade long tradition continued on Saturday as Freedom Baptist Church held its annual backpack and clothing giveaway.

From 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Freedom Baptist Church of Nutter Fort opened its doors to the public to give away various clothing items and children’s backpacks for the upcoming school year.

Clothing items were donated on behalf of local businesses, churches and community members and were collected for a year to ensure a significant amount would be available for the event. Items left over are typically donated to the Clarksburg Mission and the Mustard Seed.

Church members also helped make crafts with the children in attendance and pass out snacks like popcorn. Everything distributed throughout the event was completely free.

Freedom Baptist Church pastor Matt Magness discussed the importance of hosting this event.

“We get a chance to be the hands and feet of Jesus by doing this,” Magness said. “I know people are hurting, they need help and if we’ve got the means to help, let’s help.”

The church plans to hold a trunk or treat event for the public around Halloween this year.

You can donate items for next year’s event by calling 304-603-5840.
