WASHINGTON (NewsNation) — According to Newsnation.com unidentified flying objects (UFOs) are making significant waves in the political sphere, as a group of senators recently claimed the existence of a longstanding program that retrieves and reverse engineers “nonhuman” technology.

NewsNation’s in-depth reporting on unidentified aerial phenomena (UAPs) initiated congressional action, beginning with an exclusive interview with retired Maj. David Grusch, a U.S. Air Force veteran and UFO whistleblower, in June 2023. Grusch alleged that the U.S. possesses “quite a number” of “nonhuman” vehicles. Since then, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and other lawmakers have introduced provisions to investigate this covert program and establish a government-wide UAP records collection. President Joe Biden signed this initiative into law last December as part of the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act.

“Some of the most high-profile names in recent Senate history were involved in this effort,” Marik Von Rennenkampff, a former analyst at the Departments of State and Defense, told NewsNation. “They are cautious politicians. They would not just put out 64 pages of legislation that mentions nonhuman intelligence. There it is, in black and white.” The National Archives and Records Administration has directed federal agencies to reveal everything they know about UAPs by October 20. If deemed appropriate, the National Archives will have a legal mandate to release those records to the public.

Why are lawmakers convinced the U.S. government is hiding a top-secret UFO program? Schumer has been a strong advocate for more UAP transparency, noting that “multiple credible sources” have informed him that information is being “withheld from Congress.” “The United States government has gathered a great deal of information about UAP over many decades but has refused to share it with the American people. That is wrong and additionally breeds mistrust,” Schumer said.

The late Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.), whose home state Nevada houses the famed Area 51, was a longtime proponent of increasing funding for UFO-related activities. In 2020, when the Pentagon released footage of an unidentified aerial phenomenon, Reid stated that while he was pleased with the release, “it only scratches the surface of research and materials available.” Reid emphasized the need for a serious, scientific investigation into UAPs and their potential national security implications.

Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), who co-led the amendment with Schumer, compared the proposed legislation to the JFK Assassination Records Act. Rounds highlighted that allowing an independent collection of records could help dispel myths and provide accurate information to the American public. Similarly, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) has called for serious consideration of UAP whistleblower claims, emphasizing the high clearances and positions held by many of those coming forward.

Despite these efforts, the Pentagon has repeatedly denied the existence of a top-secret UFO program. In March, the Pentagon reported to Congress that there was “no verifiable evidence” of extraterrestrial activity or that any information was illegally withheld from Congress. Pentagon press secretary Pat Ryder stated that claims of hidden programs were largely due to circular reporting and misidentification of sensitive U.S. programs.

Nonetheless, the push for transparency continues. Schumer is expected to introduce new legislation to further investigate UAP programs within the next few months. At the House level, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-Tenn.), a leading advocate for UAP transparency, recently introduced a bill requiring the declassification of all UAP-related documents. “This bill isn’t all about finding little green men or flying saucers,” Burchett said. “It’s about forcing the Pentagon and federal agencies to be transparent with the American people. I’m sick of hearing bureaucrats telling me these things don’t exist while we’ve spent millions of taxpayer dollars on studying them for decades.”

As the debate over UAP transparency unfolds, the American public eagerly awaits more revelations on the government’s knowledge of unidentified phenomena.
