A wildland firefighter from Boise who was struck by a falling tree is in critical condition at a Spokane, Washington, hospital. Justin “Riley” Shaw and other members of the Salmon River Ranger District Fire Crew had just arrived at the Coffee Can Saddle Fire on the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forest on Saturday when the accident happened. Multiple fires in Canada, Oregon and Washington remain active with elevated smoke possible along the coast into California. Where the marine layer thins, haze and smoke may be visible depending on conditions. The Boise Fire south of Orleans is active with continued smoke impacts expected depending on conditions. Communities closest to Boise Fire and along river corridors and drainages will see the most impact with expected periods of smoke pooling due to inversion conditions. Smoke impacts may be seen in eastern Trinity County as conditions warrant.
Legendary Aufderheide Drive could be Oregon’s next ‘Scenic Bikeway’
If all goes according to plan, Oregon could add another State Scenic Bikeway to its collection later this year. Advocates and staff from Oregon Parks & Recreation Department hosted a public meeting July 29th to discuss the Aufderheide Scenic Bikeway, a route that would stretch 60 miles between Highway 58 in Oakridge to Highway 126 in McKenzie River.
