Briggs: Mark my (famous last) words — Toledo and BG are headed for a historic first this year
There may be no ‘I’ in team, but there is one in championship, especially when it comes to the path there this season. I-75 is college football’s glory road. In the national race, a team in the big new playoff could type “title game” into its GPS and — in theory — take the interstate all the way there, playing a quarterfinal at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta (Exit 249D), a semifinal at the Orange Bowl in Miami (3A), and the final back in the ATL. And in the Mid-American Conference …

The University of Toledo is trying to replicate that energy and community symmetry. And Bryan Blair believes the Rockets have the right formula. “We live in the state of Ohio, where football is a main thing that we all can relate to,” the UT athletic director said. “Whether you’re a Toledo fan or not, you’re in this community. Celebrate that kickoff of football season. Spend that Thursday with us cheering on the Rockets. And then go home and watch another game or 20 other games on your TV like I will Labor Day weekend.” The university has branded next Thursday’s season-opener against Duquense as the “Biggest Party in Toledo.” UT is heavily investing in fan experience, introducing a beer garden, live music, and big-screen TVs in Lot 10 outside the Glass Bowl.

BCAN to premiere new health and wellness show
The host of a new show on Buckeye Community Arts Network wants Toledo to start thinking about the idea of wellness in all aspects of life. “When people think wellness, they’re like, ‘Oh, like yoga ... sitting around, meditating, thinking about the goodness that is life,’ which is amazing and is totally what the show is about, but we also went to look at all-encompassing wellness and really ask the burning question of ‘How is our community actively, living, breathing, and being well and how are they promoting wellness for others?’” said Toi Creel, a producer and host for BCAN. Ms. Creel and the network are looking to answer that question in its newest TV show, Be Well, which will see her discuss wellness in a holistic sense with each episode — topics like environmental wellness, mental wellness, physical wellness, financial wellness, and community wellness. The show’s first episode, airs Sunday at 8 p.m. on the Health Network, will feature interviews from residents who specialize in different aspects of health. They included Matt Killam, chief outreach officer for Metroparks Toledo, and Isabella Weik, president and chief executive officer of the Toledo Mindfulness Institute.
