The Fourth of July concert last Thursday by the Oak Ridge Community Band marked the band's 80th year of performing on Independence Day within the city.

As explained in a recent story by Barbara Gritzner, who performs with the band and acts as its longtime publicist, the band's first concert was on July 4, 1944. Organized by the Manhattan Recreation and Welfare Department, 20 musicians calling themselves the Municipal Band performed Oak Ridge’s first band concert in the Jackson Square area (Townsite). The Community Band is one of the city’s oldest and one of the city’s most active organizations.
