After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Newbury Park, Ventura was happy to have turned things around on Friday. They enjoyed a cozy 34-20 victory over the Buena Bulldogs. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Cougars also won the last time the pair played back in October of 2023.

Girls volleyball came out with the win last night, sweeping Buena in three sets even with two girls recently injured. On Tuesday, Oct. 3, the team played Ventura in what was a “big win” according to coach Megan O’Carroll, and Addie Low (11) rolled her ankle during the game, taking her out for the “foreseeable future.”

The Vikings defeated Hueneme 46-12 on home turf, while the Mainers laid the smackdown on Bishop Montgomery 47-0. The Vikings followed up a season-opening win over Chino with a two-game slide, dropping the team’s first two home games against Laguna Beach and West, 21-9 and 30-6 respectively. The offense quickly found its footing in the past two weeks, outscoring Sylmar and Hueneme 87-18. The Sylmar game in particular showed the balanced running game of the Vikings, as the squad had eight different ballcarriers, totaling for 28 carries, 329 yards and five touchdowns.

The Foothill Tech boys water polo team faced a challenging matchup against Cate School on October 1, 2024, at the Ventura Aquatic Center, ultimately losing 10-13. Despite a strong start that had them leading 3-2 after the first quarter, they struggled to maintain momentum, leading to a tie at halftime (5-5) and a deficit by the end of the third quarter (8-11). Key players included Turner Stehle, who scored five goals, and Jayden Wallace, who delivered notable shots throughout the match. The Dragons fought hard but couldn't overcome Cate's defense in the final quarter. They look to rebound in their next game against Claremont High School on October 4, 2024.

The Pirate football team pulled away for a 34-10 victory over Santa barbara Saturday night. Quarterback Daniel Duran passed for 312 yards and three scores while running back Quran Gossett totaled 91 yards on the ground. Silas Kemp had four catches for 107 yards and a touchdown and Jayon Farrar had a pair of touchdowns in his three catches on the night. Brayden Beck had a 42-yard pick-six late to put the game away for state No. 9-ranked VC (4-1, 2-0).

The VC volleyball team dropped its Western State Conference match against Moorpark Friday at the Athletic Event Center, 25-22, 2517, 25-15. Makena Schaumloeffel helped lead the Pirate attack with six kills and six digs while Shai Daniels hit four winners with a team-high 11 digs. Callie Cahill also hit six kills for VC (7-6 (1-1)).

Cuesta Women's Soccer bounced back from a one-goal deficit to earn its first Western State Conference victory since November 22, 2022, with a win over Oxnard, 5-1. The Cougars hosted Oxnard out at the "Wilson Expanse" and both teams endured a scoreless first half, however just ten minutes into the second half the Condors took the lead on Anahi Oneto's goal, and it set off a firestorm. That initial tally woke up a Cuesta offense that had scored only once in the previous four games. Freshman Araya Dunbarr opened the scoring from 20-feet out to tie the game and the rest of the team caught the fever. Two minutes later, fellow Freshman Mikayla Schad netted the eventual game-winner, but the Cougars were rolling, and Oxnard could not stop them. All-WSC Midfielder Hailey Hallford (pict-L) and Freshman Forward Payton Lapp (pict-R)orchestrated two of the Cougars' next three goals. Hallford assisted on Lapp's game clinching goal, and, after Lapp assisted on a goal by Taylor Lynch, Hallford returned for a solo goal of her own. To end the day, Star Freshman Oneal Hunt scored the Cougars' final goal with just under ten minutes left in the contest to keep herself atop the team's season scoring ledger. Hunt owns the team lead with eight total points on the season, which, after her late goal, put her two points ahead of both Lapp and Lynch. The Cougars 15 goals this season is more than they scored in both 2022 and 2023 combined and just one goal behind their scoring total for the 2021 season. However, this year's Cuesta team has a long way to go before reaching the school scoring record, which was set in 2005, when the Cougars scored 73 goals in 22 games. Cuesta is now 4-3-2 overall on the season and 1-1 in WSC play.

Carpinteria High girls golf took home third place at the third Citrus Coast League match of the season at Saticoy Golf Course on Thursday. The Warriors finished the day with a score of 256, finishing behind only Nordhoff (226) and Santa Paula (235). Seven total teams competed in the league match.

Carpinteria High football struggled to move the ball in a 20-6 non-league loss to Whittier on Friday night at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium. “We had trouble developing consistency on offense and we had trouble blocking their linebackers,” Warriors coach Van Latham said. “Whittier was daring us to pass but we could not capitalize. The Whittier offense was able to hurt us with their ground game.”

The Warriors are in their inaugural season competing in the PacWest conference so the Penguins will be traveling down to Santa Barbara more often.
