    Stanly Softball: Three teams advance in state playoffs

    In NCHSAA state playoff softball games Tuesday, three of Stanly’s four teams in the postseason hosted games.

    2A Playoffs

    North Stanly 11, East Burke 1

    The Comets scored three runs in the first inning and never trailed in a win versus the Cavaliers (10-14).

    Sophia Crist struck out five and allowed one run to earn the win for the Comets (17-3). Kylie Speight pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

    At the plate Crist was 2-for-3 while Kylie Speight, Bre Speight and Allie Morgan also had hits.

    North Stanly will host No. 15 Bandys (15-8) Friday night. The Trojans advanced with a 5-0 home win versus No. 18 Forbush.

    West Stanly 12, East Davidson 0

    West opened the playoffs with a five-inning home win versus the Golden Eagles (14-8).

    The Colts (18-9) were led by Payton Watson, who went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs. Brooklyn Lovin added two doubles and drove in a run, and both Lilly Hartsell and Anslee Austin had two RBI doubles.

    Hartsell allowed just two hits in five innings with no walks and 11 strikeouts.

    West Stanly will host No. 24 seed West Caldwell (14-10), who won on the road at No. 9 Lincoln Charter (15-7) by a score of 7-0.

    1A Softball

    South Stanly 15, Hayesville 0

    The Rebel Bulls (13-5) wasted no time Tuesday, scoring nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and beating the Yellow Jackets (1-16) in three innings.

    Riley Dennis started for South, pitching two scoreless innings with junior Kinsley Tyson adding a scoreless inning of relief.

    Murphy 2, Gray Stone 0

    The Knights (5-12) gave up single runs in the third and fourth innings and limited the Bulldogs (13-5) to four hits in Tuesday’s game.

    Gray Stone got singles from Emily Dorsey, Caroline Lyerly, Lynley Pittman and Arlee Stevens in the game.

    Dorsey pitched for the Knights and allowed one earned run on four hits, taking the loss for Gray Stone. She walked one batter and struck out six.

    Gray Stone graduates two seniors from this year’s team: Dorsey and Kaylee Thompson.
