OAKDALE, Long Island (PIX11) – A woman drowned on Long Island after jumping into Connetquot River to save her dog, according to the Suffolk County Police Department.

Catherine Andreau jumped off her houseboat around 1:30 a.m. to save her dog, who had jumped in the water just before, police said.

She was pulled from the water around 8 a.m. near the Oakdale Yacht Club on Shore Drive and declared dead on the scene, police said.

The dog was rescued and taken to a local vet, police said.

The Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death, but Andreau’s death initially appeared to be a drowning, police said.
