At $27M, Oakland’s pothole payouts are the priciest of any Bay Area city
OAKLAND, Calif. - John Gilbert was riding with the Grizzly Peak cyclists one afternoon when he turned a blind corner near the Chabot and Science Center in Oakland. "I saw this huge pothole," he said. The 74-year-old Berkeley biomedical engineer and semi-professional timpani player was thrown off his bike. He...

Several streets in the Oakland and Berkeley hills will be closed in an effort to lower fire risk during the Fourth of July holiday, officials said. Oakland’s Lake Merritt will also include a road closure and additional city staffing to manage the large crowds that are expected to flock to celebrations by the water.

PETALUMA, Calif. - Petaluma is the first Bay Area city to offer free bus rides. The city's transit services will be completely fare-free as part of a one-year pilot program. Oakland will test letting residents add signs and traffic barriers to dangerous roads
For several years, community groups have been pushing for a faster process for residents to get the permits they’d need to make temporary changes to dangerous streets and intersections around Oakland—like crosswalks, cones, bollards, and signs—to make them safer. Two months ago, the city’s transportation department determined...

Another Bicyclist Struck and Injured by Motorist In Controversial Valencia Bike Lane
While SF has decided to toss out the new and widely criticized center-running bike lane on Valencia Street, a bicyclist was hit, bloodied up, and hospitalized this weekend by a driver reportedly making a U-turn on that street. After ten months of controversy, the unusual and some would say counterintuitive...

The weather will be great, so come out for the Hyde Ride those days.
Mallon: The deceptive influence of anti-transit groups
As a transit advocate, I’ve seen the positive impact advocacy can have on our community. However, a growing trend threatens the future of transit: the influence of anti-transit organizations posing as pro-transit experts. Anyone who regularly reads Bay Area newspapers has likely seen articles written by Marc Joffe of the Cato Institute. Organizations such as... Updating My California Rail Riding Resumé
For 77 days in 2019, I held the distinction of having ridden every rail transit line in the United States in its entirety. Then two events happened. One was the opening of the segment on Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) between Larkspur and San Rafael on December 14, 2019. The other came three months later: the COVID-19 virus. In the meantime, a few more extensions of rail transit sprang up around the country, most of them in the West and a majority in California itself.

In Unity, We Found Strength
Rideshare drivers like me take you where you need to go, but there’s much you may not know about our lives. I immigrated to the United States in 2019 from Tlaquepaque, Mexico, and have been a rideshare driver for the past four years. My wife and two children are in Mexico, but I live near Oakland, CA, as a permanent resident with my parents and brother, who are US citizens.
