I'm a sucker for homes that look great in the modern era yet have a timeless, "fairytale" charm to them. I'll admit, I'm not fully into the cottagecore aesthetic (not a hater, just not for me), but when you've got a home that has a sleek and contemporary edge but marries it with an open, earthy natural feel and is hidden away from the world by growing green gardens- that's the sweet spot, baby.

This stunning San Francisco-area home is a perfect example of the "modern fairytale" vibe I'm talking about. Nestled away in the Forestland neighborhood of Oakland, this beautiful Mediterranean-style home is a charming perfect fusion of classic and contemporary aesthetics- and best of all, it's listed for less than a million dollars!

I've yet to see a Mediterranean-style home that looks truly "bad"- it's such a powerful, instantly-appealing aesthetic, just as home in 2024 as it was centuries ago. Bay Area realtor @mattpetullo was enamored with this one, and I can see why. This property exudes timeless charm, both inside and out!

    Classic Meets Contemporary

For me, this property's exteriors are what ties the place together, so I'll save the best for last and follow along with Matt's interior walkthrough first. From the start, this place has impeccable style. The classic Mediterranean-style white plaster walls and cathedral ceilings have a clean, minimalistic vibe that feels modern, yet not devoid of personality. These walls are complemented by tons of intricately-detailed tiling decorating the foyer, fireplace, kitchen backsplashes , bathroom floors, and more. It's a perfect blend of simplicity and eye-catching color that is oh-so-charming.

Though the home is spacious, its insides feel intimate and homey, enhancing its overall fairytale cottage vibes. Nearly every room is complemented with windows looking out over the property's idyllic grounds, perfect for staring out over and daydreaming. But while the home's overall vibes feel timeless, it's decked out with modern fixtures and appliances. Matt's confusion over the spare washing machine in the kitchen really tickled me. It's just so random!

    Beautifully Bewitching Gardens

Undeniably, though, the home's exteriors were my favorite part, and were what transformed the property from just another charming Mediterranean-style California home into a secret storybook paradise. The grounds are so rich and full of detail, th secret surprises around every corner!

I was instantly obsessed by the terraced gardens hugging the side of the home, but those were just the tip of the iceberg. A garden path circling the home led to multiple cozy little seating areas, each with their own unique centerpieces: a fire pit, a table for two, a ring of redwood stump stools. The property also comes with a gorgeous patio complete with a covered sitting area and built-in grill for entertaining, but the gardens' secretive, magical vibes were what won me over. I'd never get sick of exploring them!

    A Six-Figure Miracle

With all of this property's charming details and secret surprises, the biggest surprise of all was its price. For a 1936 two-bed, two-bath home (not even including the bed and bath in its basement) in the Bay Area, in this condition and with such spacious outdoor areas, I was expecting the price to be in the ballpark of $2-3 million.

Nope! At $995,000, it sits just under a mill at six figures- a miracle for a Bay Area home of its caliber. According to the home's Zillow listing , it last sold in 2021 for $1.5 million. Its next buyer is getting it at a bargain!

This charming Oakland home at 1780 Indian Way was listed on June 21 by Alexandria Pembleton, and it doesn't look like anyone's made an offer on it yet. Just putting that out there, in case anybody is looking for a fairytale dream home near San Francisco for under a mill...
