A’s closer breaks record in dominant All-Star Game outing

The All-Star Game brings together the best baseball players in the world each and every year in the MLB. But against this tough competition, Oakland Athletics closer Mason Miller perhaps shined brighter than any pitcher to take part in the game.

Miller has been one of the few bright spots on an Athletics team that lacks much top-end talent, sporting a 2.27 ERA in 33 appearances thus far this season.

The second-year major leaguer made the most of his first All-Star Game appearance on Tuesday night, retiring all three of his batters in his lone inning of work. But how he went about retiring all three batters he faced was truly the impressive part.

Of the 12 pitches that Miller threw in the top of the fifth inning, eight of them were pitches that reached at least triple digits in miles-per-hour. This includes a pitch to Trea Turner that clocked in at 103.6 mph, the fastest pitch recorded in an All-Star Game in the pitch-tracking era, which dates back to 2008.

Velocity was the name of the game for Miller. But perhaps his best pitches in the inning came on a nasty pair of sliders to Shohei Ohtani and Trea Turner, which both resulted in strikeouts.

There is still a lot of work for the Athletics to do to turn around their roster in the next few years. But they very clearly have a sensational closer on their hands in Mason Miller who should get even better as he matures in his career.
