( KRON ) — “Next Generation Fare Gates” will begin being installed at BART’s Civic Center station on Thursday. The transportation authority said the installation would take several weeks to finish.

Crews already successfully installed a new fare gate at the Civic Center elevator entrance in April.

While the first set of gates closest to the Seventh Street entrance at the Civic Center station is closed for construction, the other two will remain open. BART said crews will work on each set one at a time until all fare gates are replaced.

Last December, BART first debuted the new gate style at the West Oakland station.

Aside from the Civic Center, installations have already started at Fruitvale, 24th Street, and Richmond stations. BART said it plans to replace more than 700 fare gates by the end of 2025. Some of the other upcoming stations include:

    • 24th Street
    • SFO
    • Antioch
    • Powell Street
    • Montgomery
    • 12th Street
    • 16th Street
    • Coliseum
    • Warm Springs

The primary goal of the systemwide $90 million project is to prevent fare evasion. BART officials said that taller, sturdier barriers and new stainless steel frames with stronger paneling and locking mechanisms make it harder for would-be fare evaders to slip past.
