COMMERCE TWP (WWJ) -- It’s a reminder to stay safe on the waterways this summer after two unrelated incidents left two people injured within minutes of each other on lakes in Commerce Township during the Fourth of July.

The first incident happened late Thursday afternoon on Union Lake, when a 32-year-old man from Waterford Township fell from a jet ski.

The watercraft kept going, and eventually hit a pontoon boat where a woman was sunbathing with her feet dangling in the water.

The woman suffered minor injuries from the crash, but refused treatment.

About 15 minutes later, just before 6 p.m. on North Commerce Lake, a 20-year-old man dove off the side of a pontoon boat near a sandbar, where the water was only about four-feet deep.

He hit his head and was knocked out, after which onlookers pulled him from the water, according to a news release from the Oakland County Sheriff's Department.

He is currently being treated at a local hospital with serious injuries, and alcohol is believed to be a factor.
