Meet NorthJersey.com's adoptable pets of the week for July 26!

Each week, NorthJersey.com would like to highlight two adoptable animals from local shelters and rescues.

If you foster, work at, or volunteer with a North Jersey animal shelter or rescue and know of some animals who are in need of a loving fur-ever home please send a photo, description, and adoption information to amwallace@gannett.com to have your adoptable pets featured in the next edition.

This week we are featuring Peter Pan and Vera from the Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge in Oakland.

    Peter Pan

Peter Pan is a 2-year-old dachshund and beagle mix. He is fully grown at 20 pounds.

Peter Pan is learning to adjust to life as a tripod after a devastating accident caused him to lose his front leg. This sweet, shy little guy was hit by a car and the compound fracture in his wrist was not repairable. Amputation was the only option to allow him mobility and he has been adjusting beautifully.

Now, it is time for him to find his forever home!

Peter Pan is currently living in a foster home and his foster family says that he is doing great!

"He is smart, seems to know some basic commands and is eager to please. His appetite has been great, and he takes his medication like a champ," said his foster parent. "I'm almost certain he is completely housebroken, as he's only gone to the bathroom outside so far. He is wonderful with all three kids - gentle, loves affection, and greets them with happy tail wags and kisses."

They continued, "Peter Pan really enjoys time outside and we've been doing brief backyard walks. He is curious and fairly confident ... a firework went off in the area while we were sitting outside, and he was unaffected. I believe he would be an escape artist if permitted ... there's a very obvious separation anxiety. He sleeps in the crate overnight in our room."

Peter Pan is looking for a calm home where he will be kept safe and socialized to new people and places once healed. He enjoys small, gentle dogs and gets very excited to have friends.

    Vera

Vera is a domestic short hair kitten who is 3 months old. Upon rescue at 8 weeks old, Vera was critically ill, weighing only a pound.

Following an intense battle to overcome abandonment, starvation, dehydration, a ruptured eye and severe infections, Vera triumphed with the spirit of a warrior kitty. With intensive medical care and a wonderful foster mom, she continued to gain strength.

After weeks of recovery, Vera was strong enough for her enucleation and spay surgeries, which she braved as RBARI knew she would. Now it is time to find the special girl an equally special family.

"She is a really lovely girl and is the perfect mix of kitten craziness and cuddly lap cat," said her foster mom. "This goofball is always bouncing around from one thing to the next and she's truly hilarious to watch. She's very social, great with other animals and loves to be the center of attention."
