Last week, The Gardner News put out a vote to let readers have a say in the winner of The Gardner News Baseball Player of the Year. The results of the poll, along with votes from the staff, were combined to decide the winner.

Johnny Losordo of Oakmont baseball is this year's Baseball Player of the Year. He was the top performer in the poll, receiving 46.91% of fan votes, and earned recognition from staff voting as well to come out on top.

Losordo stepped up in the 2023-24 season to help the Spartans repeat as the MIAA Div. 3 state champions. As a sophomore last year, he had a role on the title-winning team but was able to break out and show continuous contributions this spring.

The junior finished with a single season school record of 36 hits. He also had an average of .474, 21 RBIs and scored 24 runs. He locked down defensively as Oakmont's left fielder.

Losordo's consistent batting came in handy during the playoff run, especially the state championship game against St. Mary's when he hit a deep sacrifice fly to score Jake O'Day and take the lead for the first time all game in the bottom of the fifth.

While Losordo adds to the stat line greatly, the type of person he is stands out most to coach Tim Caouette, who emphasized that Losordo not only does everything necessary on the field, but helps wherever he can off the field.

When a close friend of Caouette's needed some help on his farm on one of the team's off days, Losordo did not hesitate to be the one to volunteer his time.

"It was pouring rain and of course, John went down and spent about five or six hours with me doing farmwork just because he's a great person," Caouette said. "He's unbelievable. He always does the right thing."

"He wants to be good and be a good person," Caouette added.

Losordo will return for the 2024-25 baseball season next spring as a senior captain with hopes to lead Oakmont to a three-peat of the state title.
