New Orleans Archbishop Aymond fights to save church, legacy amid bankruptcy, priest scandal
The photograph hangs near the main staircase in the entrance hall of the private residence of the archbishop of New Orleans. Inside the thin gold frame, standing shoulder to shoulder with a smiling Archbishop Gregory Aymond, are his predecessors: archbishops Philip Hannan, Francis Schulte and Alfred Hughes. Revered in the local church, the legacies of the former archbishops are also now defined by the heinous sexual abuse of children committed by clergy under their watch, and their unwillingness to fully account for it.
NSU will introduce Genovese Tuesday
Northwestern State University will hold a press conference at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 23 ,to introduce James. T. Genovese as the university’s 21st president. The event will be in the Sylvan Friedman Student Union Ballroom. All in the community are invited. Genovese, who has served as an associate justice on the Louisiana Supreme Court, was named the university’s president July 18 and will assume office in August. Tuesday’s program will include recognition of local and regional elected officials, figures from Genovese’s personal life, special presentations to the newly elected president and comments from Genovese.
Lifelong Natchitoches resident celebrates 100th birthday
Family and friends gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday for lifelong Natchitoches resident Laura Lavespere Saturday on July 20. She’s lived in the City of Lights since she was a teenager. She worked for years at Northwestern State University as a controller for approximately 30 years. She later worked at Gwen’s Ladies Wear until she retired to babysit her only granddaughter. She was married to Eugene Lavespere Sr. until his death in 1998. She has one son, Eugene Lavespere Jr.

$3.3 million in FEMA relief announced for the replacement of the Houma Fire Department Airbase Station
U.S. Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D. and John Kennedy recently announced Louisiana will receive $4,656,004.92 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in Hurricane Ida relief. Terrebonne Parish will receive $3,340,194.23 for the replacement of the Houma Fire Department Airbase Station. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development will receive $1,315,810.69 for hazardous debris and tree removal efforts.
