The sale of Winding Oaks Farm was reported last week. Now a representative of the buyer, a newly formed company affiliated with Palm Beach County-based The Kolter Group, has provided answers to some of the Star Banner's questions about plans for the site.

How many homes (single-family, multi-family) do you plan to eventually build on this site?

"We expect around 2,000 SF (single-family) homes, and around 1,000 MF (multifamily) rental units plus amenities, parks, etc. In addition, we have over 100 acres of mixed use land which will mostly be retail shopping, restaurants, auto dealerships and other office and neighborhood services," according to Jim Harvey from Kolter.

What will the development be called?

    Winding Oaks.

When can Ocala residents expect construction to begin? What sort of timing do you expect for build-out?

"Development will start immediately, with first homes likely available in late 2025, with a 10-year build-out," Harvey said.

    Is DR Horton involved?

Yes. The national homebuilder will be building in multiple neighborhoods in Winding Oaks.

Kolter has projects all over the state and the southeast. Why expand to include Ocala at this time?

"Ocala over the past five years has matured into a new home growth area," Harvey said. "DR Horton is our largest client in Florida and we have partnered with them to deliver this significant mixed-use community in a perfect location in Ocala."

    More information about Winding Oaks

The city of Ocala approved the Winding Oaks Community Development District earlier this year. One of Marion County's two new elementary schools is being built at the farm, 7200 SW 49th Ave. Road. The Kolter Group has developments throughout Florida and also in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.

The late Eugene Melnyk and his family owned the farm, which had a rich history in horse racing. But development plans for most of the farm have been in progress for years. About 300 acres will remain agricultural.
