    Vanguard makes a statement

Winning a big game is one thing, winning it in a shut out fashion is another. The Knight parlayed a 23-0 shut out of previously undefeated Newberry High School into a two game in streak.

Vanguard Head Coach Edwin Farmer talked about chemistry being the ingredient to make this ensemble work and it leans true. Three weeks into the season and this team may have turned the corner.

There's more test ahead but this is the perfect time to evaluate before the season ramps up. In week four the Knight draw its swords against undefeated and ranked ninth, one spot ahead of Vanguard in the 4A state rankings. Week five its a backyard brawl against top 10. A slough of local bad blood game lead into postseason. Its a murder's row down the stretch but a connected Vanguard can thrive in tough spaces.

Carter Schofield passes the eye test

The lean 6'3 quarterback played a near complete game for Trinity Catholic in its 34-14 win over Forest High School. He finished the game with more than 150 passing yards and three passing touchdowns. He's one of two quarterbacks in the county to accrue a similar stat line. Lake Weir's Reche Shields is the other.

Schofield let the game come to him, working his way through his progressions and slowly the talent flashed across the field. He threw a side arm pass that had his sideline asking did the ballc urve in the air. The sophomore's best plays were called back including a 30 yard rushing touchdown and a 30 yard jumping dart pass down the right side of the field.

These type of games are confidence boosters for young quarterbacks. Friday night was Schofield's third start of his career. This is a rebuilding year for Trinity Catholic but there's some good bones to the Celtics house.

    8-14

Twin county matchups skew the data a bit this week. If not for Trinity Catholic and Dunnellon's wins over Forest and West Port, respectively, week's win total would be drastically different.

Vanguard, North Marion, and Lake Weir all played out of town oopennents and Vanguard was the only to add to the win column. The Colts kept it close but a game winning Fort White field goal spoiled Damir Williams two receiving touchdown performance. West Nassau snapped Lake Weir five game win streak dating back to their championship push 45-0. Its a tough loss on paper but a reminder that the Sunshine Athletic Association has gained strengthened in expansion.
