( Editor's note: The driver involved in this crash is 21 years old. An earlier version of this story listed an incorrect age. )

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle late Tuesday in southwest Ocala.

Ocala Police Department officials identified the victim as 60-year-old Laddie Collett of Ocala.

Collett was laying in the outside lane of Southwest 27th Avenue, according to the driver of the Hyundai that hit him. The driver, a 21-year-old Silver Springs woman, told officers she was traveling north in the outside lane of 27th Avenue. The woman said she didn't see Collett in the roadway until it was too late.

The crash occurred in the 3800 block of 27th Avenue. Officers were notified about the crash shortly after 11 p.m.

Police officials said Collett's death was the ninth traffic-related fatality of the year inside the city limits. Of the nine, two, including Collett, were pedestrians. Officers said there were nine traffic-related deaths for all of 2023 and two of the nine were pedestrians. The numbers do not include figures from the Florida Highway Patrol, which covers unincorporated Marion County, or the cities of Belleview and Dunnellon.

No charges: FHP: Driver not at fault in crash that killed 10-year-old walking to bus stop in NW Marion

    Tuesday's crash remains under investigation.

Often people that are sick, drunk or on drugs lay down on roadways. I hope that it wasn't something more sinister. May this man RIP and prayers for the young woman, she must be traumatized .
