BENONA TWP. (WWJ) -- Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt when a tree came crashing into a cabin at a summer camp in West Michigan's Oceana County overnight.

As powerful storms blew through the area at around 2 a.m. Thursday, Michigan State Police said a tree fell on the cabin at Camp Ao Wa Kiya, with around a dozen people inside.

Responding troopers with the MSP Hart Post found that one of two adult camp councilors, who'd been asleep in the cabin along with ten or so 3rd, 4th and 5th grade girls, was "pinned into her bed" and trapped with the tree on top of her.

Troopers moved debris and glass from a broken window away from the woman, freeing her after about an hour=and-a-half.

"Thankfully, the adult counselor walked out of the destroyed cabin and appears to be just fine," MSP said.

Police said a responding trooper suffered a minor hand injury and was treated at a local hospital.

Camp Ao-Wa-Kiya is a self-described "Christ-centered summer camp and retreat center" on Stony Lake, located on W. Thomas Street in Benona Township.
