    One dead, another injured after vehicle veers off SR-78 in Oceanside

    OCEANSIDE, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) — One person was killed and another was injured after their vehicle veered of eastbound State Route 78 in Oceanside Saturday morning, authorities said.

    According to a SigAlert from California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred after the College Boulevard exit shortly before 9:50 a.m.

    Aerial footage shows the vehicle seemingly in pieces in the parking lot of an ampm convenience store, located at 3804 Plaza Dr.

    The Oceanside Fire Department responded, along with several police units.

    Fire officials said the vehicle traveled through a homeless encampment on the side of the highway. Crews searched the area and confirmed there were no injuries.

    Meanwhile, authorities said there were two people inside the vehicle at the time of the crash. One of them has been confirmed dead, while the other was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. Their condition is unknown at this time.

    San Diego County HazMat was called to the scene to monitor for any hazardous materials release since the crash site was close to a gas station. The area was found to be free from any immediate threat, fire officials said.

    CHP is handling the investigation.
